Abstract

The train station in the capital was first mentioned in the Modified Draft Railway Convention concluded between the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and the Principality of Serbia in 1880, in which Serbia pledged to build a railway linking Vienna with Thessaloniki and Constantinople via Belgrade, according to art historian Ivana Veskovic. Despite a number of proposals, the commission chose a marshy soil whose embankment began in 1882. A representative facility outside the city area, whose construction was connected to Sava Square by Duke Milos Street, is a symbol of the creation of the Serbian railway since it was built in 1884 when the first Serbian railway Belgrade- Nis. It took seventeen months to build a huge building, which was a challenge for developed countries as well. There were several projects, but it is not known which building was built, and the author is Dragutin Milutinovic, who has done a detailed elaboration of the project in the academic spirit. The first train from the Main Station left for Zemun on September 1, and only fifteen days later the first regular line on the entire section of the promised railway line.
